Blog 2: MEME

 Political Memes

It is impossible to go on any social media site and not stumble upon a meme. Be it about pop culture, politics, or anything in between - people use memes as a way to poke fun or call out things they see occurring in the world. In class, we were tasked with making political memes.

This meme was a reference to the fact that President Donald Trump had a button on his desk while he was in office that when pressed alerted a staff member to bring him a diet coke. Snopes, a fact-checking website, did an investigation into this and found that the claim was true. The button wan't exclusively for a diet coke and many other presidents in the past including President Obama and President Bush had service buttons, but the media had a frenzy with the idea of the "diet coke button" after an interview with President Trump was published by the associate press called "Nearing 100 days, Trump says his presidency is ‘different’"

This meme was in reference to the storming of the capital on January 6, 2020, when after President Trump spoke out about how he felt the election was stolen from him. According to a timeline by the New York Times, after being urged by President Trump to "show strength" by walking to the capital, protesters began to get out of hand and eventually stormed the capital building.

This meme was in reference to the flurry of pardons President Trump made during the final days in office. While many were hoping President Trump would pardon Julian Assange or Joe Exotic, the latter who was so confident in his pardon he had a limo waiting, instead Trump went on to pardon rappers Kodack Black and Lil Wayne.

This meme was a call back to the Presidental Debate between Biden and Trump, President Trump would not directly denounce White Supremecy. This video, published on Youtube by DW News, shows the clip.

All in all, Memes are a great way to deliver your opinion in a fun and creative way and it was very entertaining to make them.
